One word: Communication!!

Ben’s lack of explanation was what ruined this episode.  He never bothered to once explain what was going on.  He never apologizes or tried to get things right.  All he said was “maybe I did break up with you.”  Even Ben should have been smart enough to apologize and explain what was going on.  Hell, I bet that possible could’ve saved BenLie.  Ben really screwed up here, and we’ll see how.

1. He didn’t explain how he got involved with Looma, or the fact he’s didn’t want her.  Looma got engaged to Ben because of Kevin and Tetramandian customs.  The female is engaged to the male who defeats her in battle.  Ben didn’t tell Julie that.  He even didn’t tell Looma that he wasn’t interested (but that could be messy).  And it was confirmed in an upcoming episode “Catfight” that Looma and Attea are going to be fighting over Ben’s marriage.  Just go Way Big, put your foot down, and say NO! (and Ben, I would take Looma off your hands if you want XD)
2. He didn’t apologize to Julie about the phone call incident.  Ben was obviously playing a video game and not paying attention.  I’m sure if he sincerely apologized to her, say the whole thing was a misunderstanding, she would’ve forgiven her.
3. Ben was an arrogant prick in this episode.  But taken in this episode so that it was unlikable.
4. Ben obviously stopped calling Julie.  So if you wanna blame anyone (other than the writers), blame Ben.

The writers explained that “people don’t usually stay with people they date in their teenager years” or something like that.  BUT in Ken 10 (which was confirmed to be canon), Ben ends up marrying Kai Green, a character who he shares little to nothing with and was just a crush when he was 10.  Figure that out!

Ben and Julie were obviously made for each other.  They shared a tight bond, but that was thrown away way too foolishly.  Many Ben 10 fans love BenLie.  It was an AWEFUL choice.  Julie was a very likable character; she was sweet and kind, and stuck with Ben no matter what.  And to just throw her away like that is not right.  I’m not even truly a BenLie fan, but I support it.  It was a great relationship.
This is how it should’ve worked out:
1. Been sincerely apologizes
2. He reminds her about all they’ve been through.  Including SAVING THE UNIVERSE!  Remember she’s helped out with the Highbreed, her helping Gwen and Kevin with the whole pregnant Big Chill thing, when Ship was kidnapped by the Forever Knights, when Ben didn’t hesitate to choose her over Jennifer Nocturne, and the fact that she convinced Ben NOT to abuse Diagon’s power.
3. They both soulfully stared to each others eyes, kiss/hug, and get back together again.
4. Kick Herve’s ass to the curb.
5. It would be a heartwarming episode that would have fans going d’awwwww instead of WTF?!
Someones NEEDS to do this right.  Rewrite Rules of Engagement, but do it RIGHT.
This is WAY overdue, but has to be done.

A look back at the Ben 10: Omniverse episode "Rules of Engagement" and how it ruined BenLie and possibly how it could've been averted.

While I don't like shipping, I completely agree with everything you said here.

I was pretty upset with the fans judging the outcome of the episode. Sure, it's okay for Ben to cheat and date other girls practically in front of Julie, but Julie decides to break away and date a more attentive guy, so all hell should break loose??

IDK, but Ben is to blame, not Julie.  He was an idiot and she just figured they weren't together anyone.

Right.
I think the other thing people over-exaggerated was "how DARE Julie break up after ONE phone call!!!" Er, well, we don't know if it was just one. It could've been several calls, but obviously this show isn't going to linger on teenage drama long enough to show them all, obviously.

Hey, I have kept pointing out the incoherence in DJW's statement from the beginning. Yeah, you don't marry girls you date as a teenagers, but you DO marry girl you met only once as a 10 years old and who didn't respected you back then. Yup, makes perfect sense *SARCASM MODE*

For the most part, I agree with you, especially about Ben's stupidity in this episode. This show try far too hard to make him dumb for the sake of bad jokes. Still, there is two points I'd like to discuss:

1) Why kick Herve's ass ? Sure, he was an uneeded and bland character, but he didn't seem like a jerk to me. I think they should have just dropped him.
2) When you say Julie and Ben were made "obviously for each others". Don't worry, I respect your opinion as a shipper, and, while not in the shipping thing myself, I do have a soft spot for Julie. But could you please elaborate WHY you think they were made for each others? I keep hearing people (including DJW) saying their chemistry didn't work, without giving any arguments or explanations to illustrate. Neither does the other side; So please, could you develop WHY you think they worked so well as a couple?

Personnally, I think that the problem from the beginning with Julie is that she wasn't given enough characterizations, and those she was given weren't developped enough. I am sure that should have they been explored a bit more, she would have turned out much more popular than she is.

1). By kick Herve to the curb l mean just get rid of him.
2). Its not necessarily the chemistry, so much as what they've been through in Alien Force and Ultimate Alien. She took part in a few major events like War of the Worlds, Pet Project, Save the Last Dance, and Don't Fear the Repo. Its the experiences they share together. Their relationship was kinda on the rocks in UA, but Ben made up for in the end. Hell, it was her kiss that snapped Ben back to his senses in the Ultimate Enemy: Part 2.

1) O, okay then.
2) Yeah, I agree. What DJW fails to realize in his "you don't marry girls you dated as a teen" crap is that not all teenage couple go through saving the Universe several times. She saved him from going megalomaniac, for God's sake! You CAN'T break such a strong relationship over an argument about a video game. That's just.... wrong ? Dumb ? Lazy ? Making the whole development pointless ? I swear, this guy should just stop letting the fans' opinion decide. It worked in his earlier work, but now it's just making him sound like a fanfic writer!

While I'm not a big supporter of teenage romances, because of what you pointed out about not all teenagers stay in long relationships.... I admit, this idea really came out of nowhere.

I mean, Looma and Ester aside, I'm not just going to believe Ben is THAT ignorant to wonder only now why she hasn't been talking. A rewrite? I don't know, but at least they could've explained the apparently swift break-up better and maybe explain Herve more than just being the replacement boyfriend.

I didn't mind that Julie's taking time away from Ben, but in the words of Nostalgia Critic, "Explain episode! EXPLAIN!!"
